white's tree frog co-habitation.

nevrmore Feb 25, 2004 07:31 AM

hi,
i'm planning on starting a community tank containing a white's tree frog, a cuban knight anole, a larger gecko (golden or marbled) and a mid-size skink. if there was going to be an all-out war between the 4, the frog would probably be the first casualty. so i'm asking here if this would be a good idea. are these animals co-habitable, given a large enough enclosure? i know that people do the green tree frog, green/brown anole, house gecko and mini-skink thing a lot, but i'm not sure if the larger-scale species will work.

I'm not an expert on anoles, but White's can be little piggies. I see you have a Pacman, so you should understand. White's are voracious eaters, & have a tendancy to be obese. If I put 2 dozen crickets in with mine right now, they would eat them all. They will also eat anything they can fit into their mouth (& believe me, even if it won't fit, they'll probably try). So, if the anoles are small, I would not recommend this. Also I don't know too much about skinks (except what they look like). Are they carnivorous? Would they try to eat the frog? Although White's are tree frogs, they're all different. Mine never spend 5 minutes at the top of the cage in the foliage that's available. They like to be on the bottom of the aquarium under plants or in the dirt. So if you're thinking that they'll be up top all the time & not bothered, I don't know if that's a good plan. Just my 2 cents though

All of those animals are form different parts of the world. it would be very hard to meet each of their requirements, unless you had an insanely enormous tank(im talking 250 gallons OR MORE.) Also, there will be so much competition against eachother for food, hiding spots, water bowls, basking spots, and territory most of all. This will no doubt stress all of the animals out, which can lead to death for sure. there is also the risk of diease. Who knows where all those aniamls came from. Are the Captive Bred?Wild Caught? This means parasite transfer, and disease transfer absolutely. Another is, what happens if one of the lizards takes a chunk out of your frogs leg while hunting? Are you prepared to pay and make all of the necessary vet visits? Trust me, I highly doubt it is even worth it. Up to you, I just hope you make the right decision.

BTW- Just because petsotres mix green tree frogs with Anoles, does not make it right. Those petsotres are idiodic, and should know better. I work in a petstore, and I know better.

Knight anoles are huge, and extremiliy agressive. They will bight and knaw on tank mates. These Anoles will even get agressive if they see another lizard, and since almost all(I think skinks are diurnal) your aniamls you plan to have are nocturnal, they will come in contact more often.
