Which monitor should I get

dragonflea Feb 25, 2004 09:09 AM

I am getting back into the monitor lizard hobby and want a big lazy lizard. I want somehting that will be dog like when full grown. I am thinking eather a Water monitor or a Black throat monitor. I would be able to care for eather one I had monitor lizards for years before i quit the hobby.

Thanks

I think some things have changed, we now known how to keep monitors so that they act like well, monitors. You know, they are very active, dig all over the place, crap everywhere, break things with their constant messing with things. Hey, they do sound a little doglike! FR

When i say lazy i mean you will be able to hold it without it freaking out. I only quit the hobby two years ago.

Well.. that pretty much is a description of my water LOL.
She usually just lays around in her enlosure. She climbs on occassion, but usually it's either time to lay under the basking area, lay in the water, and eat every now and then. I personally prefer Argus monitors. You can get them to set up and beg like a dog .

Good luck on chosing

wow you have a lazy water. Or need to adjust something. My water from little to big are very active. Even the real big ones still dig around, climb, swim etc..

If I get them out they roam all over the house checking everything out. Calm or not calm I dont think I have one reptile here that would sit there for to long in one spot.

I adopted her about 6 months ago and she's been that way since I got her. She's also about 15 yrs. old according to the guy I got her from, so maybe it's old age. Cage temps are on target and she's eating well. On the other hand that could just be her personality...My argus on the other hand is very active.

I dunno my waters are both over 7 years of age and niether of them are slowing down at all.

She is old but hardly a senior citizen. But it could be her personality.

She's only about 3-3.5 feet. I have her in an 8x3X4 enclosure. I do have an idea that may help her behavior, but I have to build a new cage. Currently she is sitting on the floor. I would like to elevate the cage/floor to about waist height. The previous owner also said she was probably stunted, as she was almost dead when he got her.

holy cow yeah she is reallly small for a 15 year old. She is more like a 1 year old. Poor girl. Well given that no wonder.

Yeah, but I enjoy having her. BTW the guy said he purchased her for $5 because the dealer thought she wouldn't live the rest of the day. Now look at her.
