I am trying to read more on roaches, but still have a few questions. A post below states that the 5 roaches that can't climb glass are: Orange head roach (Eublaberus prosticus), Orange-spotted roach (Panesthia angustipennis angustipennis), Death's head cockroach (Blaberus craniifer), and the Discoid roach (Blaberus discoidales).
You forgot the 4-spot (Eublaberus distanti), these are the big boys. They are the thickest of all the non-climbers. These babies are meaty.
My questions are:
1. Are there any other roaches that can't climb glass at all that is not hard to get? That means not needing a petroleum jelly around the ledge.
1a. Most of these species you can find for sale on the web. Its just a matter of how much people want. There are a few other non-climbers, but after a lot of research the remaining species are very slow breeders. You have five good choices.
2. Which has the least noticable defensive smell.
2a. This is hard for me to answer. My orange head, orange spot, and 4-spot colonies are big enough to say the orange heads are the worst, and the other two are not bad. The orange heads only smell when you disturb them, and believe me that there smell (which is not too bad) will not stop your reptiles from chowing them down.
3. Where can I buy them in small lots? I see some roaches for sale in the classifieds, but I don't really need 40 . I rather try out 10 and see if I like them or not. A breeder in southern california that I can pick up from would be better, but if I can get small quanties of different roaches mailed to me, it would be good too. Any suggestions?
3a. Dave would be a good start. Also you may want to see if Mike will sell you 40, but just 10 of each type. I want to let my colonies get into the thousands before I start letting any go. Good luck and just remember that a little defense smell is still nowhere as bad as crickets and your pets will love them.
