Thawing out a rat and switching from mice to rats?

MightyPython Feb 25, 2004 01:13 PM

I was just wondering what some of your methods are for thawing out mice and rats? I've tried thawing out a rat in a ziplock bag in hot water but it only seems to just thaw out and doesn't seem to get real warm and I heard they should be very warm to attract the snake to it. My BP hasn't eaten in about a month and I've tried switching from mice to rats and he hasn't taken the rats yet. Not sure if it's the fact that I'm not getting the rat warm enough or he's still used to the mouse scent and maybe I need to get a mouse to rub on the rat or something. Anyway, any info. on all of this would be appreciated! Thanks!

i usually thaw my rats, by putting them in a bucket of hot water (not too hot or you get boiled rat), it is much faster, but if your snake is not taking to the rats yet you could thaw them out on a heat matt, i also strongly recommend T-rex mouse maker, a couple drops of that on a rat and i have never had them refused.

hope this helps

Do you put the rat in by itself or in a ziplock bag like I mentioned? And can you by that T Rex Mouse Maker at any petstore or only at exotic pet stores? Thanks for the advice!

i just chuck the rats in the water, my snakes dont seem to mind wet rats, i find it heats them better, as for the mouse maker i couldnt tell you i like in the UK and i get it from my local reptile store.
