Feeding boas during breeding

bigdee Feb 25, 2004 01:38 PM

Is it ok to feed my boas while trying to breed them or will feeding them stop them from even wanting to breed. I ask because I see that most stop feeding before breeding season. I dont even think mine will breed because they been together for some time the temps are low I tried taking the male out for like 2 weeks then putting him back but I still see no mating. I even checked and it seems to be male and female. The smaller is the male in pics.

When you say the temps are low, do you mean you are still cooling them? If so, boas start to breed after the 'spring' warm up. Bring them back up to normal temperatures and then offer food after they've been warmed up for at least a day or two. Also, it may be too late in the year to successfully breed. Most people I know put them together in the late fall and leave them together until January or February, typically resulting in babies in spring or early summer. I have heard of people who breed and produce litters later, so it's worth a try. Oh, as far as feeding during the breeding season, I offer my animals food throughout the breeding season as long as they are not actively copulating and even offer females smaller than normal prey when they're gravid.
