artemis laid her eggs!! some questions

dmlove Feb 25, 2004 03:04 PM

Well artemis finally laid her eggs. She is 1 1/2 years old but small for her age, and the mating was accidental (though i was planning on breeding her to ralph anyway). She got huge and laid 22 eggs, all looking viable right now. She laid them a few days ago. I was so excited! i gave her a lot of water, and fed her tons. I also bought some waxies for her, which came today. Shes getting very active, and im going to fatten her up before breeding again. Im just wondering...

1. How long should it be from the time laid to when you can breed the female again?

2. Is it normal that my male, right after brumation, became extremely active and not eating much at all. Even after he bred with Artemis, Ralph is not eating much at all, just staying his horny self. How long will this last?

3. I have the eggs on at about 84 degrees. Is this good? when will i start seeing the bad ones come in, right now they are all plump and white, i mist the container everyday on the sides. is this good?

4. What is the average incubation time, 65 days?

I cant wait, this is her first clutch ever!!

All right!!!

You don't need to mate them again. She can retain sperm. If you feed her good, you will get several clutches from her. My female laid 6 last year. They did mate one more time after the first clutch (not intended, but my fault) so the last 5 clutches were from that last mating. I did feed juvi pellets to her, with occasional small pinkies, and of course the veggies.

65 days is the average incubation time. 58 - 70 days is the broad range at 82-85 deg.f

Let us know how they go.
Later.

is the retained sperm enough to fertalize all the eggs in a clutch? multiple clutches? How many?

Do famales have any control over egg production dependant on sperm retention or breeding?

If a female retains sperm and mates with another male, can babies in the same clutch have multiple fathers?

Are there any documented scientific or other studies in this field?

All I can go off, is my experience last year with Sandy. From all I have heard, she was extremely fruitful. I am totally convinced it was due to diet.

The only way to tell if they can choose or if their could be multiple fathers would be DNA testing and to my knowledge, there hasn't been any done for that type of testing.

Sorry I can't be of more help in this area.

>>is the retained sperm enough to fertalize all the eggs in a clutch? multiple clutches? How many?

Yes, my females tend to lay 3 clutches per one breeding and I average 99.9% hatch and thrive rates!

>>If a female retains sperm and mates with another male, can babies in the same clutch have multiple fathers?

Yes they can and several breeders have found this to be true. That is why a lot of breeders will only breed that female to the same male all season long and then wait till the following season to change her mate.
