Finally decided: 25 GALLON for a trio of brown anoles!

triturus Feb 25, 2004 05:10 PM

This is an update my earlier post regarding a terrarium for a trio of brown anoles:

I was offered a 25 gallon tall tank for only $25 dollars from a fish breeder friend of mine. I set it up with pothos and cork on a soil substrate (40% organic potting soil, 35% peat moss, 25% topsoil). I have a 15 watt full spectrum fluorescent lamp over the screen lid and a 50 watt spot light for heat over one end of the vivarium. Both are connected to a light timer.

Good friend! Sounds like a good setup. Hope all your critters like it!

Sounds great! Sounds as if you anoles have a good setup. I was planning on using Peat Moss as a substrate with a layer of soil underneath the Peat Moss. I will be doing this soon and hope it works out ok. Anyone have any negative experience using Peat Moss in the substrate?

Plain peat moss tends to stick to animals when wet. The long stranded sphagnum peat moss is only appropriate for things like fire salamanders and croc newts.

Make sure to use a good UVB bulb such as Zoo Med's Reptisun 5.0.
