Ripening follicles in preparation for ovulation.......

Mardy Feb 25, 2004 05:57 PM

I have noticed that this year I'm seeing much more of this.
And most females are doing it 2-3 times prior to ovulation.
This is the first year I put the males in early, shortly after cooling
began. In the past I have placed them after cooling and not really
ever seen this happen.

Any comments or observation would be great to hear,

Thanks

Mardy

Mardy,
I lowered my night temps to about 75F on November 1 and left the daytime temps in the low eighties with a hotspot of 95F. On December 1 I lowered the daytime temps to 75F and eliminated the hotspot. I introduced the male to the female the same day and mating was seen early the next morning and several times within the next week. I saw a large gradual swelling in the female from developing follicles. Here is a pic of her with developing follicles.

She ovulated on Jan. 14 and it was huge. She had her pre-lay shed on January 28 and laid on February 23.
