Last year my female kings got fat....

Sasheena Feb 25, 2004 06:46 PM

Both my Appalachicola and my Cal king females that I bred laid 8 eggs each. After they laid their eggs and shed a few weeks later both females appeared quite fat, as fat as when they were gravid! A week or less later they got thinner, and that was that. My thought at the time was that they were ovulating for second clutches, but as they weren't presented to any males, there was no fertilzation and they "absorbed" the eggs instead of laying slugs. Lately I was told that this isn't possible. If they ovulated, I was told, they WOULD have laid slugs.

The snakes themselves are fine, but my curiosity is still rather intense on what could have caused this. Also both females laid their eggs 30 days apart from one another, and they both swelled up within a few weeks of their post laying shed. (so they didn't swell up at the same exact time, more like 30 days apart)

Any comments?

If a female in the wild went through ovulation brought on by climatic conditions and wasnt presented with a male,IT would not lay eggs! Follicles most certainly can be re-absorbed but I cant note any papers on it right now.Anyone else?Jeff
