I will draw up some rough plans and e-mail them to you this wekend. Just first if you can tell me about the dimensions you had in mind. I would suggest either 6'x3'x2' or 8'x4'x2'. Anyway let me know what you want and I will work something out for you ok. Todd

"i was considering building them a cage that sits off the ground. an eye level cage...."

Hey Croc -

I'm sure you're in good hands with Todd, but can I make just two suggestions? Don't have your biggest snakes at eye level! Even if they turn out to be super-tame, it will be a huge hassle servicing the cage off of a ladder. I'd go with something waist high to as low as a foot off the ground.

Also, consider building a platform with casters or installing casters directly on the cage bottom. There will come a time when you need to move that cage, and wheels will make your life a lot simpler.

good point, and i really like the idea of making the cage mobile

todd for now i have the space for a 5 foot long, 30 inches deep and 18-20 inches high cage. I'll be moving come june or july and will have much more space to deal with but for now thats all i have to deal with, the 2 burms are 3 and 5 feet so i'd assume a cage this size is plenty until june or july. and plus when they outgrow them i have a dumeril's boa and a carpet python that'd fit quite nicely in those cages. So nothing goes to waiste ( is that spelled right? it looks funny)

i don't need anything incredibly fancy just a water tight box with a drawbridge style door, i'd like to go with a plexi glass or glass door instead of mesh, glass just seems a bit nicer

once the burms out grow those cages i'd planned on atleast an 8 foot long cage for the male and i'd like something a bit bigger for the female, i understand i'd have to put 2 sheets of wood together, and thats fine i'll find a way somehow to accomplish this, i'm just not satisfied with giving a 20 foot long snake 8 feet of room
sorry to ramble on in this post i just want to give these guys as much room as possible, they're going to be with me for quite some time afterall

so to sum it up, one set of plans for a cage 5feet by 30 inches by 18-20 inches with a drawbridge type door would be greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance

This sounds like a terrific cage and I'm glad it is your priority to provide as much space as possible for your pets.

My suggestion is this: If you can accomidate a 5 1/2 (66" wide cage then it would make more sense from a "design" standpoint. If you go 66" wide and 30" deep and 18" high, you will use ALL of each sheet of plywood,.. instead of having a 6x48 inch scrap from each one. And by going 18 inches high,.. when you make your 30"x66" cuts you will automatically have your cage back as a remainder/byproduct. (48" minus 30" = 18" And as far as 66" wide versus 60" wide goes,.. you'd be surprised at what a difference that extra 6"x30" area makes for overall space.

Just a few suggestions. Hope you don't mind.

i love that idea, getting the most i can out of a sheet of plywood, the only reason i can't do that is this

I have a recess in my bedroom on each side of the fireplace and the recess is 62 inches on each side, so a 66 inch cage wouldnt fit, *kicks the air* i wish it would, but for now thats all the space i have to deal with so i'm trying to use up every inch i can, without making the cages flush against the wall ( want to be able to pull them out easily for cleaning purposes)

but bet come july when i move into my house i'll probably convert an entire wall to just one very large cage we'll see what the houses's options are. I'll also be sure to take picture of the cages and my burms as soon as i can get a digital camera
thanks for the suggestions, i'm open to anything you guys might be able to help me with, i am learning as i go with the burms ( so far great luck) thanks again

Okay,.. no sweat,. then go 36 inches DEEP. That would still work in terms of utilizing all of the sheet of plywood and providing maximum square footage for your snake considering your limited space for the cage. Let me know what you think of this.

My son just finished his new cage. He found the plans, I think, here and used furniture finished plywood. It was $25 a sheet but saved a lot of sanding. Inside dimensions are 6 x 2 x 2. He bought 1/4 inch aluminum c channel at Lowes and 1/4 inch plexiglass for the front doors at Home Depot. The snake goes in this weekend, just finished the water bowl area.
