Update on B subocularis

4everherpn Feb 26, 2004 02:14 AM

The sweeling seems to have gone down a little bit. I added a hot rock to his cage and he seems to be taking well to it. Friday I am going to soak him in warm water for about 30 mins to an hour to see how he does.

I believe he knows that I am trying to help him because he is calm around me and lets me look at him. He slithers up to my face and smells me. Cool snake. I can't wait for him to get better. I wanna see how he feeds. 2 weeks tops!

First of all, get rid of the hotrock. Hotrocks aren't a good idea, in fact, they can be downright dangerous. It is amazing to me that companies keep making them in spite of the fact that they burn so many reptiles each year. And then beyond that petstores keep selling them! They must have a healthy profit margin.

Find yourself a good undertank heater and plug it in through a rheostat (dimmer) so you can control the heat.

As for the soaking, you will find that Trans-pecos Rats do NOT like being placed in water and many of them will almost panic in an effort to get out. If you really nead to hydrate them, it is preferable to place them in a container of damp sphagnum or damp paper towels.

Even spraying TP Rats will cause them to dash around their cages. I have found many dozens of bogeys over the years and you almost never find one when rain is falling, unlike most other desert snakes.

Okay Chris. I know Hot Rocks are horrible. I was working with what I have in the lab. Usually he sits off to the side of the rock anyway. When he gets to my home I have a under tank heater ready to go.

I have not tried to soak him. I feel that I will not have to soak him. His condition is looking better. I think I might make a humidity chamber to see what he does. If he takes to it great if not it was an idea pursued and done with.
