question about breeding mice

mellordies Feb 26, 2004 03:07 AM

I am looking for those above tank mouse feeders that ya see in all the pet stores. I am constantly feeding them, then they burry the food, and when I clean the cage, it gets thrown out. Also, they keep chewing through there water bottles causing leaks and soaked bedding. Any advise?

find lab breeding cages that make mice breeding easy. Keeps the food and water up top so they don't mix it in with their bedding.
Hope you have alot of success with your rodents.....Richard

. I used to spend way too much time cleaning rodent cages and refilling water bottles. Putting water bottles inside the cage allows the rodents to make a mess of them and also chew through them. If the food is inside the cage the rodents will get it dirty and then not eat it. The most efficient way to raise rodents for reptile food is to use a rack system with overhead water and food. The rack systems are an advancement over individual lab cages which can take up too much room. Lab cages also have individual water bottles which have to be cleaned and refilled individually. I raise my rodents in a rack system I made using hardware cloth Freedom Breeder trays and kitty litter trays and 1x3 lumber and an overhead watering system. The rack has the hardware cloth above the rodents. I put the food on top of the hardware cloth and the rodents eat it through the hardware cloth. The watering system has one large water container and hoses to individual water valves for each tray. Freedom Breeder (freedom breeder.com) makes a rack system that is amazingly good. If you can afford it and want a big rack system the Freedom Breeder rack is well worth the money. If you can work with tools you can make your own rodent breeding rack system and make it as large or small as you need.
