I think my Beardie is Cross-eyed!

SaveFerris Feb 26, 2004 09:22 AM

Ever since I had my dragon (3 months ago) he has had a small problem eating things that were right in front of him. He would hungrily snap at things I offered him but his aim was usually off by a half inch upwards.

At some angles however he had no problem (if the food wasnt right in front of him). He has a round food dish with high walls and when somethings right against the wall he often snaps and misses which looks pretty frustrating. As long as the food is on a flat surface with no wall, (or the middle of the dish) he can scoop it up.

I examined his face and noticed that his eyes point in SLIGHTLY different angles. Maybe thats normal for a beardie?

Im not sure if its a problem but thought id share with you all.

I wouldn't be TOO worried about it. Wait until he starts running full force straight into walls, over and over again. Sorta funny, but you'll feel really bad for them.

Is your beardie doing the same thing? Id be glad to know its not just my little guy.

What i meant about his eyes is that they look like they sit on his face at slightly different angles. I really cant get a pic anytime soon.

Well I haven't noticed them actually sitting at different angles unless they are looking in different directions. It's sort of difficult to look at both eyes simultaneously to see if they are indeed independent of one another but I would think they would have to be since they are on the side of their face.

I'm pretty sure I've seen one eye looking forward and the other backward just like a chameleon but they eyeballs aren't popped out in a turret like eyesocket. I would think when the eyes are looking in a different direction they would appear to be at different angles in relation to the face, if that's what you are talking about.

My beardies are pretty accurate when taking food, though. Does your beardie only miss at his food bowl? Is there a possibility there may be a reflection of some sort somewhere throwing off his perception? I'm thinking if it's a porcelain dish with a high wall maybe the wall is throwing a reflection of the item 1/2" above where the item is.
