mbmcewen Feb 26, 2004 12:21 PM

I am wantning to put an orchid in the new tank I am building. I want to mount it directly to cork, and it will need to fit in a space 12" high by 5" wide. It will also be mounted directly under a 2 x 65w cf fixrure. Any suggestions and where to get it?

Thanks,
-----
Matt

www.customecos.com has advertised a really nice Epidendrum for an inexpensive price--should do well under your lighting conditions, and you can buy it already mounted on treefern or you can mount it yourself on the cork.

www.andysorchids.com has a great feature where you can enter your specifications to find suitable orchids they have for sale. You would want to choose a med to high light orchid under your lighting conditions, and an orchid that prefers moist to daily watering (due to the high humidity). Miniatures are what you will have to specify, as almost anything below 12" is considered a mini.

www.hoosierorchids.com has some nice minis also. They have a nice Saphrocattleya that I've been contemplating. I'll pull out my list when I get home. I would recommend Pleuros or Restrepias, but your lighting is far too intense for most of those.

Excellent sites, I am thinking of getting an orchid. I have been interested for a long time but don't know what kind to start with. Do you have any ideas? Also, do you have any other sites that has cheap starter ones (not that those sites were that expensive). Thanks for any help

Custom Ecos has the best prices I've seen on orchids, but a rather limited selection. Those three are the sites I am most familiar with, but you might try www.gardenweb.com and check out the orchid forum there. They may be able to give you some more sites.

For the most part, it seems nearly mandatory to spend at least $12 to buy an orchid from a specialty store; and more likely around $20. If you have a large tank, some of the more common Dendrobiums will do well (otherwise they get too big). Similarly, Phalaenopsis orchids can be mounted epiphytically and grow quite well in high humidity . . . but finding a smaller variety at a common plant store is difficult.
