Cryptosporidium

RedQuake Jun 09, 2003 10:55 PM

From what i've read diarrhea is the main sign of the infection. One question i have is If a gecko poops liquid once then starts having normal poops is it still likely that Crypto could be present? My gecko had a solid poop then one liquidy one with sand in it and now is pooping normal. I found the following on Crypto:

What is Cryptosporidium?
Cryptosporidiosis (krip-toe-spo-rid-e-o-sis), is a diarrheal disease caused by a microscopic parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum. It can live in the intestine of humans and animals and is passed in the stool of an infected person or animal. Both the disease and the parasite are also known as "Crypto." The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it very resistant to chlorine disinfection. During the past two decades, Crypto has become recognized as one of the most common causes of waterborne disease (drinking and recreational) in humans in the United States. The parasite is found in every region of the United States and throughout the world.

What are the symptoms of Crypto?
Symptoms include diarrhea, loose or watery stool, stomach cramps, upset stomach, and a slight fever. Some people have no symptoms.

How long after infection do symptoms appear?
Symptoms generally begin 2-10 days after being infected.

not always, sometimes they will pass a juicey one. Foul smelling really watery stools are what to watch for. They always do not represent crypto either, other parasites cause some of the same symptoms.

Thankyou. I'm pretty sure my guy just got some sand in him thats why he's not doing to well. That and the fact he didn't drink for a couple of days. He's still active (i catch him out on top of the cave alot) and when he does eat he poops normal. OH thats one thing i wanted to ask..........why the white stuff AND the dark stuff. Theres always more dark than there is white. very much like bird poop. I know they pee and poop out the same spot but i'm still not clear on what the white stuff is?

Red (Only i would ask about poop LOL)

poop, poop, poop what a fabulous thing. LOL. The white part is actually the pee in a solid for it is how most reptiles produce it. They do produce some liquid with the poop sometimes especially if they have been drinking alot or are well hydrated. There is a proper scientific word for it but I am just having an absolute brain fart right now. When it comes to me I'll post the correct term.
