frill combat before mating?

nogard Feb 26, 2004 02:05 PM

My frills are from NG, and of breeding age. I have kept them in separate enclosures their entire lives, but they have not tried to mate at all, should I let my friend use his frilled to initiate combat to motivate my male to breed? I have don eveything that I can(I followed the same steps as with my breeding pair of beardies) Any Help.

No I would not recommend that.
Frillies often take a little bit of time to get going after brumation. Sometimes months before the male starts showing breeding behavior. If he's not, the girl might not be cycling or he might not have gotten the change of seasons enough. They are pretty different than bearded dragons when it comes to breeding. Try more spraying--water will get him going more than another male would.

I agree with Dana. Lots of spraying, plenty of heat, and lots of food. I was using 4'x4'x4' cages and I think plenty of floor space is required. Make sure you female is a good two years old, because they will egg bind if bred to young. I always had two males in my cage at one time, and with three or four very large logs and a fake plant they never bothered each other. They would actually alternate breeding.
