Making Plexi-glass window in Rubbermaid. . . ?

Chrysemys Feb 26, 2004 02:16 PM

Hey,
I was wondering if you think it would be possible to make a window in a large (50gal) Rubbermaid container. I found one with flat sides. I was gonig to cut out a "window" and cover it with thick plexi-glass. I was going to hold the plexi in place with bolts about every 2-4in. The only trick is, I need it to hold water. After the bolts were installed, I was going to go around the edges (both sides, in and out) of the plexi and seal it with 100% silicone. Think it will work?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris..
Putting plexi in a rubbermaid bin is a bad idea. The plastic shell of the rubbermaid will bow out when filled with water breaking the "waterproof" seal that you might think you had. Most clear plastic rubbermaids become pretty see thru when filled with water.

It may look flat now...but not when filled with water

I forgot to mention that I would make a brace around the tub so it cant bow. I always do this when I use larger rubbermaids. About getting a clear one, they dont make ones big enough. The biggest I have seen was a 30gal.
Thanks,
Chris

Why wouldn't it work if you put the plixi in the inside of the rubbermaid contaner

Yeah Im going to give it a try. Won't know if you never try... Plus it will cost under $20 to build.
