desert torts- where can i find one?

ricci21 Feb 26, 2004 02:44 PM

i was just wondering where i could find any desert tortoises and what kind of regulations and laws there are concerning keeping these torts in California. Are there any breeders and is it legal to sell them? I know that some people own them, so how did those of you who do come about it? thanks.

The only way to own a desert tortoise is to be gifted one or to adopt one. They are illegal to take from the wild. They are also illegal to sell. Check your states fish and game website for regulations. To adopt one, you need to fill out a little paperwork and you must submit a photo of the enclosure where the tort will be kept; basically it has to be approved by the adoption agency. Good luck.
