Gold tegu=columbian??

riiotgrrl Feb 26, 2004 03:24 PM

I would just like to know the real answer...there are so many different opinions out there? is a gold tegu a yellow version of a black and white columbian? I thought so, I mean, she looks to me like a columbian (marking wise anyway) except she has some yellow ish markings. You cant tell from the pic, but her body has quite a bit of white on it. she is not all yellow. Un fortunately, i got her as a juvie so i never got to see her head coloration as a hatchling. Can anyone help?

This is a colombian. The picture is perfect for the question. Notice the single loreal scale between the nostril and the eyes. This is the easiest and best way to tell the difference on the species. True giant tegus (the argentine BW like Agama sells) have 2 loreal scales. How is his temperment? What is the texture of the skin feel like?

I would say yes and no. The only real way to tell is buy DNA teasting. Then we could get the real answer. Her is a Picture of a gold tegu from Trinidad . It doesnot look like the one in the picture you posted. Take care Russ

Gold tegus are pretty much just subspecies of the Colombian Black and White Tegu. They just more gold in color.

I would say that is true for most of the gold tegus from Colombia. I have talked stella in lenght about this and the golden tegu picture that I put up is deffenitly not the same as the ones from the main land.(Colombia). The tegu in the picture is from Trinadad. I think DNA testing is the only way to know for shure. Even the golden tegu in Barttlets book looks Much more gold then any of the other ones I have ever seen.I my self owed a golden tegu back in 1983. It had a lot more gold and no white on it as well.So Isit its own Spieces? Who knows till the DNA testing is done.

thank you all so much.
the info has been very helpful. she does not look like the gold from trinidad at all, and she does not have an orange belly, like many golds apparently do. It is pure white on the ventral side. all of the info you have provided has been extremely helpful, and thanks for the photos too!
