Help Chameleon eye problem!

NeonVertigo Feb 26, 2004 04:55 PM

My 2 year old flapneck has recently developed a swollen eye, it sticks probably twice the size that her other one. At first I thought it was just a piece of dirt or something in her eye but she started rubbing vigorously it in on the vines in her cage and since then it has completely closed up and kind of sags at the near the bottom. The swelling has gone down though but she doesn't open her eye at all now. Anyone with any suggestion please respond!

Try giving her a luke warm shower to allow her to clear it out herself. She's probably still got something in there irratating her. What I do is get a smaller cage with a pothos plant inside. I run the water over the cage for about 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for stress while she's in there.

It sounds like its too late for showering to do much good. If you wanmt to help your cham you'll get him to a vet ASAP.

I am not sure what may be going on with your cham, but I can give you some info on my experience.

First off I would recommend that you take him to a vet if it does not change soon. I had a similar problem where it puffed up larger than normal for a few days and then inflated really badly. I waited too long to take her to the vet because I didn't have the money at the time and it turned into a disaster! What had happened was some cricket parts had got caught up in her mouth and over time created a pocket there (from the rotting) so large that it affected her eye. I had to clean out her mouth every night till i could afford the surgery since what the vet recommended wasn't healing it. Needless to say she has only one functionable eye now. She is very strong though and still doing great! The vet said this was not a normal problem, but I just wanted to get that info out there just in case. I would hate for anyone else to have to go through what I did!
