Sick gecko update, please advise...

pspguy Feb 26, 2004 05:09 PM

Okay, for the past two nights, I have given Sara Repti-Aid. Last night, she ate 1 mealie. Today I went searching for poo. There was a dried spot, which looked like runny poo. I picked her up and noticed dried poo on her tail and a very red, and swollen vent area. What do I do now???? Is she constipated? LOL..

well runny poo is definetly not a good sign...what i would do is put her in a cage with paper towel as the substrate (if you dont already) and just make sure everything is very clean.... you will want to ask someone else what to do about the swolen part..i am not sure how to treat that...if you have any other questions go ahead and ask me...ill try to help as much as possible....i hope your leo gets better...

Take it to the vet ASAP. If you have already then I apologize for what follows - if you have not done so - get the money. Sell your cds, sell your game boy, sell something - I don't care what it takes, get it done. Don't own an animal if you cannot take care of it. I have patiently read several posts from you where it seems like there has been no action to the several polite (and more patient than I) people who have kindly told you to get it to the vet.

Vets are lised under ARAV @ http://www.arav.org/ Thank you.

First off, it isn't a matter of me not caring enough to get the money to take it to a vet. However, I will not go and pay a hundred, or hundreds of dollars to try and treat a sick 4 dollar gecko that I took so it would have a better home. I've done that before, when I had my dog, and it was given to me by the SPCA with parvo. I spent 800 dollars, the dog died, and that was that. Now the geckos that I purchase from a breeder, that I know has been well cared from from the day it peeked out of the egg receive superb treatment, as do my pet store leos. However, this girl was malnurished when I got her, and I expected the worse from the beginning, however, I AM trying to save her... so don't come to me like I'm just a guy who posts on Kingsnake that owns a lizard and has no idea how to care for it. I really don't care how patient a person you are, and if you never respond to another post of mine, that is all fine and good. I have had private correspondence with several of the very knowledgable breeders that come to this forum and I am following their advice.

I am deeply saddened by this attitude, and I can hardly believe that you could actually say this after all of the previous posts on the subject. I am reluctant to say what I am really feeling, so I will repeat myself in a previous post to you:

I honestly feel that the vast majority of herpers somehow feel like their reptiles are 'disposable' in the back of their minds. A huge percentage of the herp owners I come in contact with either will not or cannot afford the expense of veterinary care for their herps. Without question or hesitation, these very same people would find a way to get their dog or cat to the vet if it needed care or treatment.

If we want our herps to have the same social acceptance as pets that other animals do, then we need to 'walk the walk' and not just 'talk the talk.'

As far as herpers feeling that our pets are disposable, I can say when I was younger I felt that way. I made the mistake of getting iguana as a younger kid, like 9-11? Because they get so large, and I eventually started high school, and I gave them away. If I had been old enough to realize what I was getting into, I wouldn't have bought them. Now that I work at a pet store, I steer people away from iguanas. So I feel like I'm doing the little guys a favor. But I can also say, my leos are NOT disposable. When I was give the sick leo my first thought was taking care of her, I talked to a reptile vet and ended up spending close to $40 on a gecko that wasn't really my problem, until I decided to make her my baby. When I talked the the vet, the idea of putting her down came up (as it can/does with sick animals to begin with) She offered to put the girl down for free, but I told her I would only do it if was obvious she couldn't live her life very well, or she was suffering. Some people might have jumped at the chance to "get rid of her" and for free! But I said no, and over a month later, I'm glad!! She's deformed, but she loves me! I've made up for my disposable Iggies, and have made sure my geckos are no less important than my dogs and cats! Now my fish, they are a whole other story... That's my story! I hope one day everyone will care as much as many of us do!!

most people feel the same way about rodents. and the way most people deal with fish is disgusting. it's so sad. i think, most people associate worth with size. though some people have no empathy for animals at all, and they scare me.

All I can do is better state my previous statement. I would never abandon, nor give up on any of my pets that I was given, or purchased in a decent and healthy state. However, I knew when I took this gecko she was not in a good state and I've done my best, with the help of you guys to try to bring her back. No, I don't make probably nearly as much as any of you do, and I can't afford to go to a vet, however, if it was something I had done, or I had somehow neglected or mistreated my animals, then yes, I would seek a vet's help, and I would seek it immediately. I'm sorry you feel that way, and I really can't impress upon you my frustration at this point that nothing I do seems to be helping her. I dealt with this same issue on the first leo I ever bought (from a pet store, before ever finding you guys), and she is wonderful now. I hold you, and your opinion Marcia in the highest regard, and I hate to feel like I've disappointed you, but right now, that is my opinion.

Jeff, I just responded to your email, but I wanted to post this for the benefit of others on this forum:

I am sorry if you feel like I think badly of you. I don't. I am just upset that you have spent so much time and energy posting on the forum, expecting others to be your veterinarian and tell you what is necessary to help this little gecko. The vast majority of advise has been to take it to the vet... and this is what the porr creature needs in order to have a better life!

that at all implied you knew nothing of geckos. I did, however, have a tone that presented how clear it was to me that this gecko was an "acceptable loss" as it was clear you were unwilling to spend money on its care. In your reply it as also clear I was correct to have that tone. If you do not have a lot of money (which I understand being a teacher) then you should consider budgeting money in a safe place so you have the availability of emergency funds when ANY animal falls ill. It is a very nice gesture to take in a sick animal, but the gesture loses faith with me when the caretaker is unable to provide care to needed level. I apologize if my disagreement with your beliefs and actions offends you, but I did disagree, so just deal with it. I do thank you for taking it to the vet (I read the post you have most recently) and that was a good choice. Marcia said it best - we have to walk the walk. Thank you.

Hi Jeff,
Doesn't sound too bad. Probably something simple so don't freak out yet. The first thing you need to do is raise her temps. to around 90°. Try to get a good fecal and put it in a baggy in the refrigerator until you can get it to a vet. He'll want to see your leo, too. I'd normally Panacur then keep an eye on her for a couple days before I call the vet.
