I use Leopard Gecko Dust by T Rex..

newkid Feb 26, 2004 06:36 PM

My little Leo is eating quite well. I leave a small dish of the Leo Dust in the tank and I feed him daily around 7pm. I shake and bake the crickets for him but Im wondering if that is still necessary since I choose to keep a small dish of the dust in with him 24/7. I read ALOT of care sheets and try to summarize it all into one plan for me that works. Shaking and baking can kinda be a hassle and messy. If I dont have to do that life would be better =) Otherwise Im thinking of going to a mealie staple. From what I can tell mealies are fine as a staple. Is that correct?

If I still need to shake and bake its not a prob, just gettin ideas..
By the way what does the 1.0.1 etc mean on pet lists and how do I upload a picture? Thanks

1.0.1? It means they have 1 male, 0 females, and 1 juvie (too young to sex).

male.female.tooyoungtosex Get it? Got it! Good!

Keeping a small dish of TRex wouldn't really be beneficial. Put a small dish of Phosphorus free Calcium supplement in the enclosure instead.

Ok so with the phos free calc supplement I can stop dusting cricket meals?

Thanks for the upload info I figured that part out. Please dont yell at me about my crushed walnut substrate. Hes doing very well on it at the moment, normal eating and releaving =)

Thanks

P S is it ok to make a mealie staple with cricket supplement?

Eep!

I don't want to start another substrate debate, but if he is on walnut shells (desert blend i think they call it), I would definately remove them. They are very jagged, and if swallowed can be very bad for your gecko. switch him over to paper towels or reptile carpet, or something that isnt loose. Especially for one that young, you dont want him to get blocked up or have his insides scratched!

Crushed walnut is probably one of the worst substrates you can keep a leo on (next to sappy wood mulch). You shouldn't even keep adult leos on entirely sand, which is smooth round and small...crushed walnut shells are jagged and large and if injested WILL harm him! Baby leos shouldn't even be kept on any amount of sand let alone walnut shells... For the little ones safety I would seriously get him off that substrate as soon as possible to avoid possibly causing his death....

For all the people that agree crushed walnut is bad for a juv there are as many websites that state they have raised geckos for years and never once had a problem.. I see the point believe me and I'm not trying so start the arguement because Im sure this topic has been beaten into the ground...I want a healthy happy gecko. Who is doing very well by the way. To avoid the risk what shall I use for the substrate? I will go with the majority.

I dont want to use paper towels or astro turf etc. So that leaves play sand, ,slate,... what else, Im drawing a blank atm?

This means establishing a new tank temp with UTH and Day bulb.

How about Tiles? Not the stuff for your kitchen and bathroom floors.

Crystal put some in her tanks recently. Go to my website, http://www.thegeckobarn.com/ and then click on "Housing Systems."

The top right pic and the 2 bottom are hers with the tiling in it. Mine don't have it cuz I just haven't been to her house to get any (she lives WAY across town.....)

They're good because there's nothing for the gecko to swallow.

Another case in point about the sand and all that stuff. Go to Petsmart. Or Petco. Look at what they keep their leos on (sand), and then look at the leos (sick and/or just unhealthy). We keep complaining about it at the ones here that we go to, to no avail. Poor things. They come in healthy, then die because of people not knowing any different.

I found one website that gives a whole explanation on why you shouldn't use sand and that stuff (what it does to the leo). Actually, one of my students found it.. Hopefully, it'll be in their Works Cited - I'll try to find it & pass it on to you...

I'm not gonna start a sand argument...but I don't believe sand is as bad as everyone says it is...anyway...the problems isn't sand its crushed walnut shells... which is a LOT worse than sand. Basically the key here is getting the leo of the walnuts...sand would be a vast improvement. I would recommend tiles though. If the tank is a 20L I would recommend putting an area of sand at the end...but since the leos is still very small I wouldn't recommend that...maybe paper towels at the end.

I never said that. Just having a cap full of TRex Dust isn't really beneficial, at least I do not think it is. You should just put some Calcium (RepCal, MinerAll I) in the cap, and continue dusting the feeders as usual. I have a good Caresheet on my website if you want to take a look. It could be helpful.
