when can i start feeding pinkies

myBDike Feb 26, 2004 07:44 PM

My beardie is 11 inches long head to tail. His head is bigger than my leo's and they can eat a pinkie's just fine. But some ppl say not to feed them until they're adult, and i wanna feed one now, so can i safely?

I'd wait until they are an adult so as to avoid any digestion difficulties, others may very well disagree, I'm not sure what the general consensus is on size for being able to eat them.

More importantly however, pinkies should only be used as a VERY rare treat. Many people refuse to give pinkies to their beardies at all unless it's a female who has just recently laid a clutch.

Pinkies are very high in fat, and not particularly nutritious, and can lead to all sorts of detrimental things like fatty liver disease and other such problems.

Don't forget that the older a Beardie gets, the more herbivorous its diet should become.

I see this question all the time and I wonder if it comes from people that are new to beardies who have had snakes and are used to feeding this type of food or what.
My guy is almost off live food entirely now, only a superworm from time to time as a treat and he usually doesn't even eat those. He's pretty much entirely herbivorous now (thank goodness)

It's been my experience to ONLY feed a beardie a pinkie when gravid.

Don't be over-excited to feed a pinkie to a beardie. if you really need some carnivore activty get a snake or monitor.

it's should never be about your entertainment.

it's not that entertaining anyway.
