Finished my first beardie tank, thanks everyone

mr_velocity Feb 26, 2004 08:25 PM

I've been watching this board for the past 5 months gathering as much info as I could about beardies and cages. Everything from disinfecting the wood and rocks to substrates to basking lamps. After bleaching the rocks and wood overnight, letting soak in the bath tub in clean water for another two days to make sure there was no more bleach in the wood and finally cooking it in the oven at 270 for 3 hours I think it's clean. I have a 100W MVB and a 50W halogen bulb over the basking area. Also have a 250W thermostatically controlled custom made heater under the tank that heats the air space only to 80 degrees, this will avoid any of the hot spots. Temps are perfect, even at night when the house goes down to 62. I still need to add the substrate, playsand. Most importantly I need to add a beardie This will happen in April. Total cost of materials was under $200, just a lot of time to build it.
What does everyone think? Did I miss anything?

I made a stainless steel tray that slides into the cabinet so I can pull it out and dump the substrate. I'll only need to remove the wood and rocks first. It also helps radiate the heat up from the air space below.

Thanks again everyone. This site is a great resource.

I think the slide out tray is a cool/great idea. I cant tell how deep it is, but it doesn't look practical. I have mine on enough substrate to "enjoy" a couple of inches. this way when they get the urge to dig, there is enough there that they can. Again I think it looks awesome and I wish I was that talented.

The tray allows for 2" of sand, I'm hoping that will be enough. Otherwise we'll just have to add a "digging" room for him.

2" should be plenty to dig in, the heat reflection of the metal was a very good idea.
You're going to have one happy beardie!!

When were you planning to come to my house and make me some of those?
The only consideration I would have for you is to start out in a smaller tank if you're getting a baby. A 6 inch dragon would look lost in that thing. He would have a very hard time finding his food. Either that or you may want to feed it in a different tank. Finding tiny lost crickets in there at night so they don't chew on your dragon will be an adventure.

Your tank is awsome. II've been planning to build something similar. Can you tell me what kind of wood you used (looks like laminate pine), where you got the glass doors and tracks, and what type of finishes you used. Thanks
