Infertile egg reference?

el_toro Feb 26, 2004 09:34 PM

An earlier post says that female uros will lay infertile eggs. Is this correct? This will be my first spring with the uros and need to know if I need a laying box in there for her even though no breeding should be going on.

My female anole does lay eggs all over the place though she is kept alone, so I know it's possible.

You may want to set up an egg laying box just in case. Some females will not lay eggs they have inside them if they do not find a suitable area for them to lay and will become egg bound which can kill them. Good luck.

Thanks - I will set one up immediately. They might like it anyway, whether or not eggs are involved.

So she will develop eggs regardless of if she is bred?

You know, I had the exact same question; the last two years my single female Mali would swell up, spend hours under the basking light in weird positions, and generally look and act like she was gravid, BUT, there were never any eggs...after a few weeks she'd "deflate" and go back to normal appearance and behavior...I'm going to guess that she was gravid, but resorbed the eggs...There is no mention in any of the literature that indicates that uros lay infertile eggs, but lots of other lizards do...so who knows? If anyone in this forum has ever had a single female lay infertile eggs it would be really helpful and interesting to know...Anyone?

Yes, i responeded to one of your previous posts, they DO lay infirtle eggs, one of my young females did this even though she wasn't housed with a male. Also, I dont think that it is possible for them to reabsorb the eggs. I know if one of the eggs pop or start leaking while in the female she will die, so i dont think they reabsorb their eggs, but i am not sure. For my nesting sites i have a plastic countainer that is larger than a shoe box. 1 is filled with moist dirt, the other one is filled with moist vermiculite. They prefer the vermiculite. When i say moist i dont mean damp, just moist enough so when you squeeze it it in your hand it holds it shape. Also, these plastic containers are under the ground. I have a foot of soil so this works perfect, if you dont then you will have to make some ajustments. Since it is under ground i have a 45 degree 3-inch PVC elbow that goes from the surface into the side of the nesting box. I burried the boxes with the tops exposed so i can lift up the tops and see if there are any treasures for me to put in the incubator. This works great, and they love it. Most of the time they sleep there so it is basically a nesting/resting chamber lol, so it fits all of their burrowing needs.

My nesting boxes are above ground and spray-painted black. I'm going to have to open the lids when I need to check. Without causing stress or disrupting behavior patterns.... how frequently would you recomend checking them?

I started checking the nesting box daily 1 week before they were do just in case. Also, if she starts to dig crazy i would take a peak in the box if it last more than an hour. For my uros it doen't really bother them, but i still would try to limit the disturbance. So i would do it everynight, and during the day if she was digging for over an hour i would check the box. My female started digging like crazy 3 days before she laid her eggs. So dont be surprised if she has been digging in the box for more than an hour and you find no eggs.

Thanks, Mike - this is exactly what I needed to know!! I didn't realize they did this. I'm glad I found out before it was too late!
