Sara2 Feb 26, 2004 10:10 PM

I am clueless about setting up websites. I really would like to make one I just really don't know where to start.
Is there a website that tells you how to make them?,lol
Also how do you guys separate the gecko from the rest of the picture and put it on a different backround?
Lol, about all I can do with computers is get online and load pics from my digital.
Thanks

There are plenty of tutorials out on the web, try searching for ‘html tutorial’ and ‘css tutorial’. Be prepared to do a lot of research, and expect some trial and error. If you try working through a few tutorials, and you find that making WebPages isn’t your thing, don’t give up hope. You may be able to have a friend help, or pay someone to create a page for you. I think if you take the time to learn how to do these things on your own, you will have more satisfaction when you have your OWN page. Feel free to email me if you have any specific question, ill do my best to help.

I’m not sure about removing the background; my guess is that it is done in Photoshop or a similar program. Hopefully someone else can point you in the right direction.

As far as making websites goes, there are TONS of books out there on how to do it. Just go to your local bookstore and ask somebody to point you in the right direction. I, unfortunately, don't have any suggestions, I'm not a web designer myself, but, if you ever have any computer hardware related questions, I'm your man =)

For the editing the photo onto a differnt background, as best I can figure, they use photoshop. The easiest wa to do this would probablly be to take the picture on a solid color background and then replace that solid color later in photoshop. Much in the way the "blue screen" works on tv or in movies. Another option would be using the "magic wand" or "lasso" tools in photoshop. those are my guesses. I hope that helped at all.

Starting out on your first website is just a lot of trial and error. My very first website I ever made went through so many changes until I finally got it right. This is a good website that got me on my way when I first started making websites: htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/. You should start out by using a web page maker like the free one at www.geocities.com. As far as cropping out the geckos, I use photoshop. What I do is take a picture of the gecko on a solid color background that would be nowhere on their body, like blue or green, black works sometimes too for the hypo tangerines. In photoshop I then use the magic wand tool and hold down shift to select all the area outside of the gecko. I then make that area white. Then you have your cropped out gecko. You can do some other cool things to it at that point like adding shadows etc.

Here's the original picture of one of my geckos.

And then here he is incorporated into one of my logos.

I'm using my old sony vaio laptop that I had recently retired as a web server. Since I have a dsl connection and I don't expect a super-high amount of visitors at one time, it works perfect for me. No monthly charges, no data limits (I think it has a 6gb hard drive), and no bandwidth limits. I just setup all the software (which can be complicated as well), and put the laptop under my couch and it runs 24/7. Once in a while I'll reboot it and make sure the security is tight.

How were you able to set up your own server? I've wanted to do that for a while now, but never really looked into it all that much. I have tons of computers parts just laying around and I should be putting them to good use, lol.

Hi, email me at salarellajr@hotmail.com and I might be able to help you out if your interested on how to get it to work. It just takes special software, a dsl/cable connection, and you gotta know how to setup your router and stuff. Thanks.

My website is hosted through www.ipowerweb.com. I think it was something like $100 a year for the hosting and the domain name.

Thanks. My gecko cam has been down for almost a month now since I moved those geckos into one of my racks. Maybe I'll point the GECKO cam at one of my kingsnakes, lol.

Looks like I'll give it a try, unless I can find someone to do it for me ,lol.
Thanks for telling me how to do the pic thing. Yours looks really good. I don't have photoshop but I think my camera program has somthing that came with it. I'll have to check it out when I get a chance, and see if I have to get photoshop.
