I am getting worried about Dexter's nose

jakeleolizard Feb 26, 2004 10:45 PM

Hey all,

I am getting worried about Dexter's nose.. i thought it was healing up, but today when i got home, it was all bloody again

I have been putting neosporin on it... and i even got some nylon sort of screen to put under the regular hood screen to make it softer when he jumped on it... that seemed to help... but it cut down on the amount of light in his cage and i didn't think that was good.... so i took that screen down....

I don't know what to do... i am not sure he is eating properly b/c of it... i dunno... b/c he is thinner... and i am sure it hurts...

Has anyone experienced this and what do you do? I know Eve suggested the neosporin.... has anyone used "second skin" that stuff u put on blisters for protection as a sort of second skin? Do you think i should take him to the vet?

Thanks for everyone's input....
JIM

Jim, My Kong the big guy is going through the same thing. He had origianlly opened it a few months ago, after leaping to the top.
I used neosporin, and it healed. He has re-opened it about 4 times now. Seems to me instead of toughening the skin there like a scar, it stays soft.

I feel its my fault, with Kong, because everyday I let him out to run the room.
And if I get held up or he thinks hes not coming out, he starts jumping, and hitting the top.

I also have a female(one of his mates) doing it also. Although her nose is fine !

But I know what your going through and yes, I do think their nose is sore.
When I go to dab his clean, and put ointment on, his first reaction is to pull back a bit.

I was also thinking about the liquid bandage stuff, and just may go and try it. Cant see it hurting his nose anymore than whats already being done, having a bloody little sore every week.

My solution for now, I just let him out after he basks and eats.

And he has the run of the room. When he wants warmth, the bugger climbs a branch I have leaning against another tank, and goes on top and lays by his neighbors light for awhile.

He then goes to a pile of rocks and plants I have in there and goes to sleep under his own KONG rock !

SPOILED BRAT !! I will let ya know how that liquid stuff works!

Thanks for the info Eve... I will be curious to know if the bandage stuff works... is it toxic to them?

Have you heard of others having this issue? I would be surprised if no one has... seems like this is characteristic of Collard's.

Has anyone been able to heal their's back to health?

I feel really bad for the poor guy.

if they continue to jump and repeatedly hit it then it makes another sore !

I think if we used that it would just cover it, but would NOT help from banging it, ya know?

So the more I think about it, it would not be of any use as far as stopping it from happening.

If i leave Kong out, it heals in a couple days !
