they do add heat, I use them mostly for viewing. The rope can get quite hot if left on for a long time. I have mine on a timer that goes up to 30 minutes. It can mess with my temperatures if I leave it on longer that that. I have left it on some nights when it is extra cold, so I wouldn�t have to mess with the dimmers for the heat tape, and it seemed to work well. They really do create a cool visual effect, and they let me see what my little guys are up to.
