SUPERWORM AND MEALWORM BREEDERS

bigdee Feb 26, 2004 11:01 PM

COULD YOU POST PICS OF YOUR SETUPS. I HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF ALIEN MEALWORMS AND A FEW BEETLES SO I MAY BE DOING OK, BUT I AM HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE WITH THE SUPERWORMS. AT FIRST IT SEEM TO TAKE FOR EVER TO GET ALIENS THEN I GOT LIKE 1-2 ALIENS WHICH JUST TURNED DARK AND DRIED OUT, THEN LIKE A WEEK AGO I GOT 2 BEETLES BUT ONE LOOKED REAL BEAT UP TODAY I CHECK ON THEM AND THEY BOTH ARE DEAD I LOOK IN THE FILM CANISTERS AND NOW I HAVE LIKE 3-4 ALIENS AND THERE WAS 1 DEAD BEATLE IN THE FILM CONTAINER AND 1 DRIED UP ALIEN. I HAVE 3 CONTAINERS FIRST IS WITH THE FILM CONTAINERS, ONE IS WITH THE ACTUAL WORMS AND THEN A CONTAINER FOR THE BEETLES I GIVE THEM POTATOE AND CARROTS THE SUBSTRATE IS OATMEAL AND DOGFOOD. I HAVE THE FILM CONTAINERS IN A SHOEBOX LID SITTING ONTOP OF THE OILFILLED HEATER(HEATS THE ROOM)EVERYTHING ELSE I PUT ALL THE CONTAINERS 4-5 IN A LARGE RUBBERMAID(OLD CAGE FOR A MONITOR I HAD)WITH A HEAT LIGHT.

First, your post gave me a headache, please turn off your capslock.

Second, mealworms and superworms are bred differently. Superworms you raise in film canisters till beedle and then mix the beetles together in bran/moist vegetable.

Mealworms, just put them into a bran cereal bedding and leave them alone.

Man, I agree, I couldn’t even bring myself to read that. What paradisio said is all correct, and you should add small pieces of potato, carrot, or apple daily. Please remember: Caps lock; it’s a privilege not a right.

Ok i did forget about the caplock. But I didnt get any useful information from those post the post stated mealworms and superworms are bred different, in my post I said I was ok with the mealworms and that I had alot of aliens. The post also said I should give fruits, vegies for moisture and that I you should use film canisters, in my post I saide that I use potatoes and carrots for moisture and that I have 3 bins 1 for superworms, 1 for the film canisters that I seperate the worms to pupate and 1 for the beetles. It seems like some are just making it to beetle stage. Some are dying in the canister at worm stage, some at alien stage and then the couple that made it to beetle stage didnt live more than a few days. Before someone post I may have been putting them in the canister too soon too young and they may not be strong enough, which I think I was because now they are much larger so I am waiting till they are like 2 or a little over 2" and now sine are making it to beetles but still dying. I do thank you for replying and trying to help.

My mealies took FOREVER to breed & produce teeney, tiny baby mealies. You'll need to be very patient w/ the mealies, it took mine 2-3 months to get these tiny babies.
With the superworms, I have also had the same frustrations. I take the longest ones I can find, isolate them w/ some dry gutload & wait interminably for them to transform to aliens, then beetles. I give them moisture once they turn to beetles, but some haven't morphed right, like some of yours haven't. I've never managed to get 2 morphed all the way to beetles at the same time... very difficult little buggers!
