As a web designer/developer I have spent a lot of time searching out the best deals on hosting over the last couple of years. At this point it is so competitive that prices are dirt cheap for good hosting and most people are significantly overpaying. I host over 20 sites with DayanaHost and most of those are on their lowest level personal package which is only $5.99 per year! I have had almost no downtime at all over the last couple of years with them. The 5.99 package doesn't seem to offer much but it is plenty for the needs of most sites. I host my Genetics Calculator on the 5.99 package and it gets over 4000 page views a day but still results in me only using 10% of the 1 gig of bandwidth per month. If you would like other recommendations then let me know what your site is like (# of photos & sizes, etc.) and I can offer some more recommendations since I'm currently using 8 different hosts and one might be better than another depending on your exact needs.

One caveat I should mention though is that I cannot offer any information regarding their customer support since I have never needed to contact them. If you are new to hosting and will need lots of ongoing support they might not be the best. If you would like other recommendations then let me know what your site is like (# of photos & sizes, etc.) and I can offer some more recommendations since I'm currently using 8 different hosts and one might be better than another depending on your exact needs.

I am new to it...I've only had free websites up till now. My current site is in my sig, but now that I've gotten a domain name it can be reached through www.illinigeckos.com. I think I'd want the $16 dollar plan, but I'm not sure I'd really need it...besides the things that are on my current website I'd want to add a caresheet and possibly a phase comparison page. If you have any other advice I'd GREATLY appreciate it!

One of the great things is that you can start out with the cheapest plan and then if you need more space/bandwidth/etc. you can simply upgrade to a higher plan at any time. I've done this a couple of times without any problems. Since you are fairly new to hosting you might want to check out P4Host. Their $24 a year plan offers a lot and they have incredible support (mostly via a message board). The 2 times I've posted messages they were answered within an hour.

Would either company allow the use of my domain name, or would I have to transfer it to thier service?...

Yes, both allow you to use your domain. I would stay away from any hosting company that didn't. You just need to change your DNS servers in the control panel area of the site you registered your domain with. They will tell you what DNS servers to use when you sign up.

hmm...I think I'm gonna go with p4host.com...what's your id so I can list you as the referrer? Also...do they happen to have a site builder or would I have to do it all myself? If not, do you know of any hosting companies that are comparatively priced with a site builder?...I just don't have the time to try to figure out how to do one myself (I could do it...but it would take me FOREVER!).

My ID is leopard. I don't believe they have any sort of site builders and I don't have any experience with anything like that so I don't know of any hosts that do. I would assume though that they would be considerably more expensive ($10-15 month) since they are targeting inexperienced users who don't know about cheaper alternatives. If you need help designing your site then I would think your money would be better spent going with cheap hosting and investing in a program such as Dreamweaver or similar (I'd stay away from FrontPage though). That way you pay only once for the program instead of paying the host an ongoing fee for some awful sitebuilder forever.
