ACF Problem

passerby Feb 27, 2004 12:48 AM

My ACF, Desmosthenes, who I acquired along with Locke the ADF a month ago, has been sluggish and extremely reclusive for the past week. I recently removed Locke from the tank, after I learned that the two species defintely don't go together. Since then, Desmosthenes spends all his time hiding in his castle. I *never* see him anymore, and can only assume that he's eating because his food is gone when I wake up. (I suppose, though, that the filter could just be sucking it up.) When I prod him out, he looks healthy, but scoots around his tank really fast, over and over again. Do they sometimes randomly become nocturnal? Am I doing something wrong, care-wise? Is he just lonely? Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks!

Is your frog wild caught or captive bred? Most ACF's are captive bred but there are execptions. If wild caught, disease, stress and parasites may be hindering it's captivation.
With any new frog there is a time for it to get accustomed to it's surroundings.
Obviously make sure the water is warm enough (research your animal if not yet done!). If your frog feels the only safe place to be is in the castle then maybe the rest of the aquarium needs to be made a bit more reclusive. Try adding plants and different furniture.
Also I've found that if you keep 1-2 feeder guppies in the cage it will stir up your frog's attention in addition to adding greater nutrition.

Thanks a bunch for your help! I got him from a girl down the hall (she hadn't cleaned the tank in four months so her roommate made her get rid of the pets), so I have no idea where she acquired him originally. Maybe it's the clean water that's freaking him out... I'll add some more plants, too. I worry, though, about the feeder guppies. He's not *that* big, as far as ACFs go, and I'd worry he might not be able to eat them. I guess I'll just look for some small ones.
Thanks again!

ACF are social, from what I've read, and I know for the short time I only had one frog, she seemed depressed until she had a buddy. I would consider getting another ACF to keep with him. I think it's cruel to keep social animals without at least one other of thier kind.
