New Member and my first MHD

nejoum Feb 27, 2004 03:03 AM

I got my first MHD about 3 weeks ago. He is alert, eating Crickets and Superworms.
He has a appt. with the vet this comming Wed. As I am sure he is WC.
He is in a 10gal. now, but will move into the 60gal. when the CWD moves up to the 175gal. In about 2 weeks.
I would love to get a female sub-adult. Preferably CB.
Any leads?
Diana

Welcome to the club =)

The wonderful reptiles are great pets, and mine has brought me endless amounts of joy.

Let us know what kind of habitat, you are setting up your MHD in. Possibly post some pics or something.

The only person that I know of that actually has success in breeding these guys in captivity (on a level of selling them) is FroggieB. If you check any of the previous posts of hers you can get the link to her webpage. She has done a lot of hard work to learn about these guys, and it has paid off because now we can all learn from her experiences/studies. You'll find her to be the best resource for questions. I am not to sure what the status is of her clutches/hatchlings right now. Thats obviously something you will have to take up with her.

Keep us updated on the status of your MHD (esp. after his vet visit).

Cheers and Good luck!

We just got back from the vet.
No worms, but he is a bit dehydrated and needs to increace his intake.
I have liquid Calsium/vitamin to give him daily. He suggested feeding him a pinky 2 or 3 times a week.
I am so happy I don't have to fight worms!

Untill he is doing better then weekly.
I have found a place to get them for .24 cents each by the 100. And I don't have to pay shipping, as its about 20 miles away. I will just drive over.
My Water Dragon will enjoy them too.

so nice to hear you had a vet check done right away. I'm really glad to hear there are not health issues other than the hydration. Did he also suggest electrolytes? If not I would suggest you use them. I think they can make a huge difference and can also stimulate appetite.

I don't feed pinkies that often but just re-read the section of the Agamid book on A. capra and it suggests that this species eats small lizards in the wild. I am wondering if perhaps that means they should be getting more protein. I know that with reptile/amphibian eating snake most breeders use pinks so perhaps they need to be a small part of the A. capras diet.

At any rate, welcome and the best to you and your new friend. We hope to see more of you here on the forum.

The vet didn't say....
I tryed to feed him one this afternoon.
Didn't seem interested.
So when I gave him the liquid calsium and probiotics, I just popped the pinky in.
He sat there in my hand for a bit; then snap snap it slid right down. We then watched the evening news togther.LOL!
