First of all I just realized it's a hardwicki, and my experience is with my two Malis. Anyway, if the heat is not adequate, he may go to sleep at about 1 PM. Mine were going to sleep very early every day like that until I gave them better heat. You would come home from school, and he'd already be asleep.
The number one reason he may not be coming out is the fact that it's winter. Have you brumated him? He may be beginning to do it on his own, especially if your home has decreased in temperature. But you say the food is gone each day...
It's quite possible he misses his former cage mates, if he had any.
You really gotta get him started on the hand feeding, or else he'll have little reason to like you, lol. Try some dandelions or other obvious Uro treats.
