undertank heater

redic33 Feb 27, 2004 06:19 AM

hello

I am in the process of converting an old 50 gallon tank that I have sitting around into a beardie home. It used to be a fish tank but when I moved from Boston to San Francisco a couple of months ago I tried filling it with water and it had a leak so Ireplaced it but want to use this one for a lizard. My question is if undertank heaters work. If I use a 2-3 inch playsand substrate will the heat be able to get thru? The heater I saw mounts on the outside of the tank on the bottom and supposedly keeps the temp 10 degrees above room temp.

Thanks In advance...

There is really no need for a UTH unless your house temp drops below 60 at night. BD's like the coolness to sleep in.

SAND HEATS UP AND HOLDS HEAT. I KEEP THE SAND ABOUT 1 INCH OVER MY UTH AND LET IT MOUND UP TO AROUND 3 INCHES AT THE COOL END. ALSO MY BEARDIE LIKES TO LAY BELLY DOWN AT NIGHT RIGHT ABOVE THE UTH. IT MAY NOT BE NECESSARY BUT HE LIKES IT. I USE WASHED PLAY SAND FROM HOME DEPOT IN 2 TANKS AND DUCK SHELF LINER FROM WAL-MART IN 5 OTHERS. DRAGONS ARE AS DIFFERENT AS PEOPLE SO THEIR SET-UPS ARE DIFFERENT TO.
