Revisiting the BTS diet question

jenniferc Feb 27, 2004 08:53 AM

I've wondered about giving my BTS leftovers from our meals as a way of adding more variety to his diet. Specifically I'm wondering about things like pasta with cheese or tomato sauce on it, baked beans, meat that has been seasoned and/or fried. I've haven't given him any yet but often wonder about it. His regular diet closely follows James Wilson's recommendations that I got when I first bought my BTS.

Most of those things are loaded with sodium, I wouldn't think that is good for a skink. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

interesting question-
We do share healthy and appropriate people food with our pets.
The dogs get random table scraps including cooked meats, fresh and cooked veggies, and pastas.
The parrots get pastas and veggies if not heavily seasoned, small amounts of sweet dairy, and yup- cooked beans.
The skinks on the other hand don't share much with the people, but I do give them cooked and raw people quality veggies- both left overs occasionally as well as stuff made just for them. I don't give any of my reptiles anything 'seasoned' and they don't get dairy products.
Some left over people food I might give to a BTS would be cooked egg, grated fresh veggies, cooked veggies, maybe occasional cooked and minced poultry or beef- but I would not give them anything cheesy, seasoned, or fried. I never tried any pasta, and probably wouldn't. I don't believe they need much in the way of processed carbos, and this could cause GI upset if they ate it.
Cheers, Jess b

With all due respect,

Grease and excessive fat are not found in a natural Tiliqua diet. Also cheese?!! It is a milk product. Thus, a natural part of a synapsid (Mammalian) diet. Reptiles have evolved completely free of mammary glands and products based from them are thus total alien to a Reptilian diet.

I knew of an individual who feed Pizza regularly to a Green Iguana. Not surprisingly, the Ig died in short order and the internal organs were a complete mess upon autopsy!

On Feeding-PLEASE stay the course-don't stray!

Sincerely,
Brian

I feed my BTS occassional small amounts of pasta, especially the whole wheat type. He loves it & it was listed as part of the really complete BTS diet that's been posted here before. It should be plain, though, not sauced.
