Okay, I took Sara to the vet this morning....

pspguy Feb 27, 2004 12:36 PM

I called up Dr. Weinski, who is the vet the runs the wellness clinic in my store. I thought he only did dogs and cats, but he does have some herp knowledge, as his main practice is pretty much out in the sticks and he has to deal with horses, pigs and any other pets the families might have there. I scraped together as much "stool" as I could from the substrate (which as it turns out I didn't need) and packed Sara into a deli cup and away we went. The first thing he said when he saw her was how beautiful she was, but very malnourished. I explained the events of the past 2 days and got his thoughts. We didn't end up needing the stool sample because she crapped on him, lol, which was pretty funny. He had to take that back to his office with him to check it for parasites and such, but will get back to me in a day or three. Other then being signifigantly underweight, he said Sara looks fine, and unless she starts regurgitating or refusing the Repti-Aid and mealworms I've been hand feeding should recover okay. She does have a deformed skull (at least that is our best guess at this point, I've never seen a gecko in such bad shape and her head just doesn't look right to me)... Anyway, he suggested giving her warm baths after I have fed her at night, and just letting her rest and do her thing. His only concern was at this point was she just too far gone to fight to regain herself... however, once we got home and I put her into her tank she walked around and around, and then has been sitting in the waterbowl for about 2 hours, which I'm told is a good thing.

Anyway, thats all for now... I have to head to Home Depot for a roll of carpet to redo the tanks tonight.

I sure hope everything goes in her favor! You know, when they are that emaciated, their heads do look malformed due to the muscle loss and lack of fat around their heads. Please keep us posted.

If your little one is eating and pooping, then I doubt it will be hard to get her back to health. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted!

...that was the right thing to do. You have to understand my strong opinions stem from a personal belief in the sanctity of all life. I understood the reasoning of your side before, I just did not agree with it. Also, if she ever refuses the repti aid, you can combine ensure with pedialite for a good mixture (I found plain pedialite with vanilla ensure works well). I nursed a female back from very poor health and I found she did well with this. Thank you again - and good luck with Sara.
