Okay...what is going on with my snakes

aplaxco Feb 27, 2004 02:07 PM

Everybody else's snakes are gravid or laying already and I can't even get mine to do the deed. I think there is a possibility that one of my 'males' is actually female so I am taking 'him' in to the vet to be probed. I do have another pair with a proven female and a boy that is acting boyish (twitching) but still not jumping her. I did not cool them down this year but I didn't think that would be a huge problem. Can anyone give me some advice?

No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful.

Do you know how hard that is? LOL I am SO not good at the patience thing.

lol, I know what you mean, But actually, the ones who are pregnant or laying already are pretty early...mine included. I've never brumated any of my snakes yet, maybe I will next year, but last year and this year my snow didn't seem to need it to breed Also, for the first probably 8 times I put them together, I didn't think they did anything, but only a week after I actually whitnessed some heavy mating behaviors, I noticed she was getting a lot bigger. So they did it when I didn't think they did, cuz she's about to do her pre-lay shed now, and the time I saw action was only two weeks ago.

Just keep putting them together, it'll happen then you can wait forever for them to hatch lol

Are you leaving them together or time in and time out? I have a proven breeder snow corn that no one has seen in the act but he has fathered 4 different clutches.
I also wouldn't blame cooling either. Said above male has not been cooled to breed the last 3 years.
Yours is just to much of a gentleman.
Relax, well, okay, try and relax.

Okay...I'm going to relax. I think the thing that's flipping me out is having not one but two snakes turn up possibly being the wrong sex. One of the snakes I thought was male doesn't twitch really at all around females and one I thought was a yearling female starting do the twitch while I had 'her' and another female climbing around my desk on cleaning day. Now I am taking them both to the pet store so that this guy there that I trust can check out their tails, because I swear they all look the same to me. I really need to find someone to teach me how to probe.

Also, from the pics and descriptions on here of blood and after-goo I expected to at least find a crime scene after leaving a pair together for a while. Even if I didn't see them do the deed.

I was a nervous wreck when I first started breeding rats and those are just food. Can you imagine what I am going to be like 20 days into incubation? My BF is going to kill me. LOL

You will give up, separate them and come in to eggs one morning.
Seriously. My gentleman snake NEVER twitches or seems to chase or ANYTHING. But he always does the deed.
He had a pouchy throat and little whistle last week and didn't clear it with home treatment so went to the vet yesterday. Showed off, mostly no symptoms but got meds. This morning I see 'goo' in the cage and the hypochondriac mom in me is wondering if it is URI spit or 'evidence'. I am trying not to worry either way.

You may very well have two females (same thing happened to me when I was younger). I say get yourself a probe kit and probe verfify the sex of your animals and future animals. It's not hard to do and not nearly so dangerous as some make it out to be. You could likely do it as well as (or even better) most vets after very little practice. In fact, a vet (Dave Doherty) first showed me how to do it and he made the same statement.

If you know anyone with an adult male that was cooled over the winter, then I recommend that you get in contact with this breeder for a breeding loan (if you end up with two females).

karm Feb 29, 2004 01:05 PM

I read the other post where you said you're going to "relax". People are sold animals of the wrong sex all the time. I said that it happened to me, and it did: I got 31 and 12 slugs out of two 2.5 year old female albino corn snakes (12 slugs produced by the "male". I say if you haven't independently verified the sex of the animals, then don't relax until you do. Get a probe kit.
