Our new whitew throat, Big Al!...PICS

thecaiman Feb 09, 2003 06:52 PM

I have always wanted to White Throat I see one that someone had a long long time ago and feel in love but for some reason never got one till a couple weeks ago. The down side is this guy was abused, neglected. A good freind of mine had him from the time he was a baby. I seen him about 2yrs back and he was an awesome animal, tame as can be and his size was enough to impress anyone. Well my freind decided to sell him due to space limitations and he has 2 other HUGE waters that dwarf this guy. He had offers for up to $600 for him and wound up selling him to a freind for $300 because he trusted the freind. Well a year later this freind calls my buddy up and asks if he can sell the monitor as he is getting out of reptiles. My buddy says sure, trusting his freind he picks it up at his house on the way to a show doesnt even look at it. Well at the show we get it out of the bag and you should have seen this poor thing. Skin stuck all over skinny as can be dehydrated, It looked like a VERY bet up fresh import. Anyway we worked a deal and I got him. Hes eating great calming down ALOT and slowly bu surely looking better a few more months and I dont think youll be able to tell. I have had him for the last two weeks in a 54inch vision cage, way to small for this animal. Finally I finished his new cage its a bi level that is 8x4x4 with a second level that is 2x4 a 3ft water tub and plenty of room to move about. In time I wanna get some drift wood like trees for him to climb. But just thought I would share. Jason

Everything I can find on this guy(pics in prior post) apears to be Varanus albigularis albigularis. From what I have looked up it labels yours as a cape white throat and mine in the prior post as a south african would you agree? Obviously I am not up to date on monitors but would like to know what I have LOL. I obtained it as a white and had someone else I know that is really into monitors look at it and they thought it was a white.

What do you think the one in the pic here is? this was was sold to me as a black throat. The one in the above pics really needs cleaned up. Hes still a little to wirery for me to bring out for any period of time. As soon as he clams down I wanna get him in the shower and scrub him down real good to get the layers of skin off but he isnt willing to work with me just yet. Anyway what do you consider this one to be? how do you sex these guys? thanks man Jason

The pic that Philmc has posted is a whitethroat. They are the same species according to the "experts" because they have alot of similarities and can innerbreed. The BT has large spots spaced farther apart and usually has a dark throat. The WT has bands or rows of smaller spots much closer together. The BT is dark gray or black as a primary color with gray/blue on cheeks with yellow sometimes around the nostrils. The WT is brown or tan. The BT is known to grow 5-7 feet where as the WT is known to grow 4-6 feet. If you see a Robert Faust cross the colors of a WT on the patterns of a BT. When the WT I ordered shows up Ill get some pics posted. I have a few from where she is coming from.

Sexing? is there anyway to tell between the two I have? the big one is 4.5-5ft and the smaller is around 2.5-3ft. Anyway to compare and tell or do you know of anyone good at it? thanks for your time Jason

Seeing fully everted hemipenes. The male as an adult has large ones with finger like projections on them. The female has what looks like tubes with no projections. The female may also lay eggs as an indication, but they may not also. The males usually have large bulges at the base of their tail that in some cases make the tail base look out of proportion.

Where did you get your white throat?
You see a lot of blackthroats around but fewer whitethroats.
He has great light color!

Hi, he is from Frank Retes..

SHvar Feb 10, 2003 01:49 AM

He was sold as a blackthroat, as a very tiny hatchling but his throat turned brown then white. His colors turned very light also. He is only about 5 months old or so.
