Is it ok to use styrofoam to take up some of the space of the substrate of an aquarium

wideglide Feb 27, 2004 07:05 PM

instead of having 4" worth of gravel?

I'm going to be using a container for the water portion of my tank with the rest of the substrate being gravel then moss. I was thinking instead of buying so much gravel I could put a layer of styrofoam then gravel and then the moss. Does this make sense to anyone?

Thanks for your help!!!!

It doesn't sound like a good idea to me. What about drainage? I don't think the sty will let the water threw. If your talkin about the popcorn type I read that some types decompose.

something. Like, lets say you bought a set of plates and when you opened the box there was a form fitted piece of styrofoam you had to lift in order to get the plates out.

Also, the styrofoam wouldn't be in the water area, just in the area where there was land. Now that I think about it though, I guess there isn't really that much land area anyway so there wouldn't have to be that much gravel.

That's true about the biodegradable styrofoam. Didn't think about that and what if started to fall apart and little pieces came to the surface. Probably not a good thing! Plus, I'm sure there is going to be some runoff water from the toads when they get out of the water area.

Thanks for your help!!
