Another decision constipation-I need help deciding about tank size!

shopaholic Jun 10, 2003 02:44 AM

A bit more indecision going on tonight in my anxiety prone head causing a great deal of paralyses in coming to a final conclusion. Need you guys to dislogde me from my decision constipation once again!

The info I have from several great sources: for Imitators(I have a trio 2.1 I want to put into a hex tank and let 'em go at making house)-5 gal/frog to start but go a little bigger to accomodate for the offspring unless I want to remove and pair them up elsewhere. But some tell me not to get much bigger then 30 Gal because I may never see the little guys. So I wanted to order a custom 16Wx16wx25 to 30tall. Which would make the tank around 33 gal at the larger dimention.

Will this provide enough space to get the right amount of Broms inside and enough places to hide so the females won't duke it out if a female is added to the collection via offspring? Is this the right size for the long haul? What are your oppinions on the matter? What sizes do you guys have and what would you do the same or differently? Thanks-I await your mental Exlax

More females then males can be a bad thing especailly with eggs involved. They will try to destroy the eggs and the subordinate females will never get a peice of the one male. You should try for more males then females because you are sure to get eggs and that you will not get unfertilized. most dart will mate with the same member in a group, my leucs are in a group of four and the female will only mate with one male. My pair of vents are bonded in a way that they would stay together even when running away from my hand when I was trimming plants.

Sorry Maggie--you've certainly gotten some mixed messages about imitator habits. With mine, only the females fight or mess with eggs, the non-dominant male staying clear of the scenes. I wonder if there may be a difference in blood lines or some subtle differences in habitats involved in these opposing observations?

By the way, my "first born" began calling today, so it's a boy!
