Has anyone ever heard of an Emerald Hopper?

Lyn Feb 28, 2004 05:34 AM

My local store has some small green frogs that are labeled Emerald Hoppers. I haven't seen them in a few months so my mental picture of them has faded. They weren't solid green but did have pretty green markings. Bigger than the dart frogs. I don't know if they were tree frogs or not, they were all on the bottom of the tank hopping around so probably not. I'm having trouble finding any info at all on them, so I'm thinking that they normally go by a different name and maybe Emerald Hopper is just a pet store type name? Or just that nobody has them? They were not expensive or fancy. I think they were $15 or less. But I liked them and would like more info on them. I'm going out there today, if I pick some up I'll post pics. Maybe that will help with the identification if they are normally called something else. Any info would be welcome!

Was it Scaphiophryne marmorata? Pudge frogs, rain frogs, ground frogs and hoppers are all common names. Have a look at http://www.amphibian.co.uk/scaphiophryne.html for more information. Good luck,

There was a diff guy at the pet store yesterday and he said they are from Madigascar and are in the Marble Hopper family, they come in diff colors and they just call the green ones Emerald. He said they bury themselves in the substrate and I'd hardly ever see them. He showed me a baby Albino Bullfrog who was really cute. I'm going to research them some more before going back, but from the little I've done so far I think that's the way I'd rather go. I almost picked up the Bullfrog yesterday but accidentally looked into the ferret cage on the way to the reptile room. I just lost a ferret to cancer 2 weeks ago. I fell in love with this little cutie pie...

It was probably best to hold off on the Bullfrog until I can learn more. I'll post pics if I get him. He's tiny now, not much bigger than a quarter.

I currently own an ornate hopper which in the same family as the emerald just different species. Although they are beautiful, I NEVER see him he is ALWAYS buried in the substrate however watching him eat is absolutely amazing. The other comment I have is to question the pet store on where they got that one from b/c for that price he is probably wild caught and I personally have had very LITTLE success in wild caught frogs. It may be wise to infest a little bit more money to get a captive bred one plus it will save you the heartache.
