Hissing cockroaches

UKCondakeeper Feb 28, 2004 05:46 AM

HI All,

I recently visited a local zoo and one of the corators said they bread hissing cockroaches to feed to thier amphibs. I have since seen these for sale at a pet shop.

Im thinking about getting a breading programe going to add some variasion to my feeding plan. What i need to know is how difficult are they to maintain (keep alive, feed and bread) and are they in anyway not sutaible for any of the species below

Giant South African bullfrog Asian painted bullfrogs
Blomberg's toad Colorado river toad
Amazonian horned frog American bullfrogs
Golden posion arrow frogs Brazilian horned frog
Red eyed tree frogs Surinam toads

I know adult cockroaches would be two big for some of these but what about the various stages of development?

Thanks for any help.

I not sure about some of those species but cockroaches make great diets for larger amphibians ( pixie frogs, horned frogs )And I think I heard somewhere they breed like crazy if kept in the right conditions.

Thanks for the response, any idea what the right conditions are to bread them?

I read somewhere that if you keep them above 80 degrees that will breed more often then at room temperature. You can feed them collard greens. They can also climb the sides of a glass tank so they can escape easily.Do a search on webcrawler I found a couple good sites there.

Actually keep the temp at 90-95f.
All you need is egg flats or paper towel rolls, some aspen (so babies can hide) and food. I use dog food (high protein is a good thing and fruits and veggies. Keep the humidity around 85% for molting. You can mist the sides of a rubbermaid(i use 66qt) for water or put a small container for them.
Remember at the above temps and humidity fruits will mold fast.
As for breeding you don't have to do anything but keep the temp high. They can climb smooth surfaces so either use vasoline or bug stop available at cricketfood.com.
That's all there is to it...

You don't have to do anything special to get them to breed. Just keep the temp up, humidity right and feed high protein. Greens aren't needed..
Carrots, crushed cat or dog food, fish flakes are fine, apples, and oranges. Slice the oranges, apples, and carrots length-wise so they can eat due to how there mouth is positioned..
