how do You feed on aspen?

ginevive Feb 28, 2004 07:36 AM

I just switched from newsprint to aspen substrate. How do you experienced people feed your BPs while using aspen; in a seperate feeding container, by putting newspaper over it, or by scooping the aspen to the other side of the cage? All these methods came to my mind, but I am not sure which I will go with.

i feed all of my bps on aspen either by forceps, or by leaving it in the cage on the aspen, it does not stick to the food unless it is wet.

I ALWAYS put newspaper down and put the snake on the news paper. Aspen DOES and WILL stick to the food, the snakes saliva can make it stick, and there is no telling if he uses his head to push down while his head is in the aspen, he could get it in his mouth.

Just to be safe I would put him on paper or feed him in another container.

I saw a nightmare happen to a friend of mine who fed his jungle carpet on aspen! He bought over a female jngle carpet who died due to being egg bound. Upon disecting the deseased animal I found a large blockage in her intestinal tract which consisted entirely of aspen bedding! This caused a large bulge in the intestine which constricted the oviduct and the anamal was unable to lay the eggs. I use cypress mulch or mini pine nuggets. Newspaper is the safest but I like the looks of the bark/mulch and it maintains humidity better. Some breeders use only aspen and have had good luck. As for me, I still have flashbacks of the imbedded aspen after seeing my friends best jungle carpet die.
