Best beginner frog? I'd say its the one whose coloration, habits and ease of care best suits your needs. I realize its not the answer you were looking for, but there are many species out there which would would be considered easy to care for. Many of the tinctorius are large enough and colorful enough to be considered; terribilis are fearless; azureus are fantastic show animals. Many people recommend the auratus as a good first frog--I do not disagree but their timid nature makes them a little less "showy". Price should be a consideration, but foremost should be that you read all you can, prepare the terrarium before purchasing, and prove that you can sustain a food source. If you are like most of us, you will not stop with one species...

I WOULD RECOMEND ANY OF THE MANY TINCTORIUS MORPHS MOST ARE BIG , BOLD , COLORFUL, AND VERY HARDY. ALOT OF THE SO CALLED "BEGINNER" SPECIES SUCH AS leucomelas OR auratus ARE TOO SHY MOST OF THE TIME TO HOLD THE INTEREST OF BEGINNERS.
