Spider tortoises

darkpilatus Feb 28, 2004 12:20 PM

I just rescued two female Pyxis arachnoides oblonga hatchlings can anyone tell me some info on them. I need dietary needs for all age tortoises of this species and I need to know humidity, temperature, photoperiod, substrate, etc. Thank you.

Dr. Bill Zovickian would be the one to ask. He is an expert on the Pyxis.

You have to buy one from him, before he will respond to your questions.

Who in the world would neglect a spider tortoise? They are so expensive it seems hard to believe that someone wouldn't take good care of them.

They're actually a very hardy and reletivly easy tortoise to keep. As opposed to making this a long message detailing on what to do this care sheet from the Tortoise Trust will give you good direction.

Good luck and you have a great "grow your own" tort!

I just recently acquired a Pyxis Oblonga hatchling. I keep him/her on 70/30 peat moss/play sand mix. There is a humid hide (about 75% humidity) that has some wet moss that he/she likes to burrow in. I feed him/her romaine, kale, strawberries (favorite), melons, and apples. At night, I try to keep the temperature at about 70 degrees. I soak daily and keep the lights on for about 12 hours a day. I have a question, though. If they are hatchlings, how do you know they are females?
