Education (for the posts below), for fun:

andrew owen Feb 28, 2004 03:17 PM

There is a small stock brokerage here in Portland, OR. filled to the brim (well, maybe 50 now)with people without educations.

When I was in highschool, I was told that I better go to a school so that I could support myself oneday, make more money, have things, etc. I said, OK.

But then, I realized something. Education as we understand it teaches us about certain things. I apply those certain things from my education in my understanding of texts, but not at work. hmmmm? Now maybe if I become a psychologist, maybe I can apply my education that I had once started.

Back to the brokerage. I met a guy named George (actual name). He was kicked out of college for not showing up to class. He was homeless and using drugs constantly. He then said, "I am either running off to Hollywood, or I will be a successful stock broker"

George makes roughly 6 times Sam's and Jeff's salary combined. In many months those boys at the brokerage make a hundred grand a month.

So, what is the point of education?

I still don't know, but I did leave the brokerage to get more educated. I guess I found it more valuable to be able to help my kid with his homework than to buy him a beamer.

QUESTION: if I use 1/2" how much time does it take for the heat exchange to be worse off than using 2" insulation? 12, 16 hours better? What If I use a 24 hour heat pack as opposed to a 40?

Off to my grad school apps, I am feeling more stupid everyday.

as a matter of fact, my monitors are also making me feel more stupid, I found a clutch of ackie eggs in a dirt clod at the bottom of the cage where I thought I had checked when it wasn't a clump.

In all honesty, ANYONE axcell at college. Im dead serious. You dont have to be intelligent. The key to college success,is perserverience, not smarts. Grankted, there ARE people who seem to be keener. You know, those a$$holes who never seem to have to try, and get a 4.0!! I hate those guys! Really though, it all depends on what you DO with your education. I really do admire both types of people though. The guy who plugs away and gets his doctorate, as well as the highschool drop out, ex drug fiend, who discovers his hidden talents and ends up a billion-aire. They are both worthy, and "smart" in their own ways.

atleast that is what some guy on the phone from Arizona once told me.

Educations do not make people successful. It is not the degree but the person with it. Degrees are licenses but any moron can get a license.

In order to call yourself successful, you must be successful. It actually does not have to be about monitors. I have no idea, why you twisted it like you did.

With monitors, people talk about all sort of successful things, without ever being successful. Thats whats odd. But that happens in all walks of life.

Remember, you jumped in and talked about all this success your going to have. You said, your going to be a Big big breeder, and go to the shows like the big boys, hahahahahahahahaha, well I hope your learning how you do that, you actually have to complete your goals, not start them. FR

yeah, you're right. An education is unnecessary. The wealthiest people I know have little to no secondary education. Why would anyone bother getting an education? Now I feel really silly!

Wait, I just remembered something... my personal view of 'success' isn't based on how much money someone earns. Wow, imagine that. So much for the American dream, huh.

In MY version of success, the most successful people I know are people who love their jobs, do what they do well and are happy. Many of them had to get an education to get the job they wanted (don't you hate that!), others didn't. Some were educated in exactly the field they ended up in, others were educated in other fields but found their education helped them, nonetheless, others still weren't educated at all.

In MY version of success, Sam and Jeff are far more successful than your friend the millionaire suit. They get to work with the animals they love and get paid for it. Would either regret their education if you told them they could make millions by trading bits of imaginary paper for vast sums of imaginary money? I can't speak for them, but I can guess.

So, Andrew, it seems your values aren't everyone's values. You don't value educations, some others do. There is no right or wrong. Don't you hate that!

One thing I can say, though, is that when I underwent surgery over a year ago I was glad the surgeon was educated, rather than a 'do it yourself, self made woman'.

crocdoc2 Feb 28, 2004 06:35 PM

didn't you recently advertise a big break you were taking from the forums?

"One thing I can say, though, is that when I underwent surgery over a year ago I was glad the surgeon was educated, rather than a 'do it yourself, self made woman'."

hahahahahahaha, that was really funny.

I am sure Sam is grounded and mature enough to take everything the right way, it was a disagreement on heat packs, not social classes, or higher educations. Yes there are idiots with Phds, and there are idiots with billions of dollars. I don't understand the purpose of such separist statements (the original post), but that isn't unusual considering the source.

P.S. - Can you email me, I've got some questions on the two part epoxy you used.

Now your being a bit like those off subject folks down below.
All education is important. There is no doubt. But maybe more important is how you apply it. You know, for good or for evil, hahahahahahahahaha.

Thats the problem below. People with a good education, but not enough sense to apply it where needed.

Just like your doing, they shoot off in a non-benefitual way. For instance, who gives a flying foxcrop, what a heatpack does in a freezer. If they had sense, they would ask how the thousands of shipments using heatpacks are used successfully. Isn't the mission to successfully ship in cold weather? It has a lot to do with common sense.

Or about mister science and social multicluthing monitors. If he was as smart as he thinks he is, he would not deny it. he would ask some basic questions, you know like a reporter, how?where?why?when? want? show me???? But no, he acts like he is a seive for monitor knowledge. If he does not agree, then it doesn't happen. In this case, man does it happen.

Maybe hes afraid to learn. Even more importantly, they choose theory or hard fact. How educated can that be. I do understand if his publications are all about monitors being non-social, then finds out he was wrong, yet, thats gotta hurt.

As you know, it does not take magic to multiclutch a monitor. Yet, some educated folks can't seem to do anything with theirs. I guess it must be properly applied education.

By the way, I just dug up a clutch of perfect V.pilbarensis, eggs. Wahoooo. FR

I guess I wasn't clear: I value education, and am educated, not as much as some, but I have a bachelor's and am continuing to go to school. I didn't blow all kinds of money for nothing.

American Dream: I don't subscribe to that idea. If I had, I would have become a successful broker.

Idiots: Bill Gates is a college drop out and a genius, not an idiot.

Separatists: It wasn't a separatist post. I would rather be both, educated and wise. It takes time, I am only 25, half the age as many here, perhaps when I am older I will be both, I am trying.

Bad eggs: I have no idea what good it would have done for me to take pics of the ackie eggs, but if people really want to see them I will take pics. Or just don't believe me when I say I screwed up, I don't care.

Forum Break: I am finding it hard not to jump in every once in a while, but am posting less than a quarter as much as I used to.

For Frank: You have been doing this 30 years, I still have time to become successful, bug me about my statements in a few years. Secondly, I quoted you word for word.
