What should you do when biten by a snake?

Tigergenesis Feb 28, 2004 04:04 PM

I'm trying to remember all the 'tricks' I've heard for getting a snake to release it's bite. I seem to remember hearing you can pour rubbing alcohol, water (can't remember if it's supposed to be hot, warm or cold) and.....

Am I remembering these right? Any other tricks?

If you're not getting chewed on by anything big enough to be life threatening, wafting a tissue with rubbing alcohol on it will usually convince the snake to let go in a reasonable period of time. Mostly you only have to do this with a snake that thinks you're food for some reason (defensive strikes are usually quick), so then you have to go evaluate why the snake made the mistake and what you can do to prevent it.
Oh yeah, and keep the bite marks moisturized because the worst part of them is that they itch.
(yep, I've been there)

Also make sure never to move the snake more than necessary. Teeth can break off rather easily, which is not good for the snake, and not good for you as they are breaking off in your skin. Andy

I watched a show on constrictor snakes on Animal Planet about a month ago. When bitten by a snake they recommended pouring alcohol (this includes rubbing alcohol and even hard liquors) into or around the mouth of the snake, spraying the snake with warm water and gently bending the tip of the tail backwards.

Now that is a fair amount of money down the drain. If I was going to use liquor, I would just keep some MD20/20 lying around haha.

If your life is not being threatened, I'd really avoid putting anything IN the snake's mouth. It probably wouldn't be to great for them to get in their lungs.
The warm water on the tail sounds kind of far fetched to me.

I didn't agree with it either. What happened was the python constricted his chest after biting him and he yelled to his friend to find some alcohol, his friend came running back with a bottle of Jack Daniels and asked if it would work! The guy, barely able to breathe at this point, started yelling for him to pour it around the mouth and on it's face. It worked, and the snake released him rather quickly. I thought this would cause harm but apparently it didn't.
As far as the warm water, they said to spray the whole snake, not just the tail. The end of the tail should be gently bent backwards. These three methods had been tested by several people they had on the show, and (from what they say) are proven to work.
