D3 vitamin supplements VS. UV lighting

to_the_sun Feb 28, 2004 06:20 PM

Its my understanding that UV lighting is recommended to help lizards get vitamin D3 in their diet which assists with digestion. But there are also vitamin supplements that can add this to thier diet. Are the supplements inferior to the expensive lighting in some way, or are the vitamins perfectly fine, inexpensive alternative?

From what I understand of late, reptiles make their own D3 (for calcium absorption) as they need it IF they get enough UVb. D3 can become toxic if they are given too much (as in supplements) so in theory, UV lighting and allowing them to do this naturally is the safest. I'm sure their are other schools of thought out there. Possibly this, can we actually give them the amount of UV they need with artificial light? If not, some D3 supplement is in order. I'm not completely sure which way to go myself.
