Well how big do you not want a turtle to get? There are plenty of turtles that stay around 4 inches. How small are we talking?

4 inchs is very good. I dont want turtles such as RES those 9 inch-11 inches are not wanted. Something in the area for 4-6 inches. 6 inches max head to tail.
I think a better question would be how big an enclosure are you willing to provide? How old is your brother, and who will be the primary care-giver?

My brother is turning 12 in may. I will be the main caregiver of this turtle. As for space wise i have a 10gal at the moment. Access to a 20 gal long tank as well. Have some rubbermaid tubs i'm guessing in the 30-55gal limit. So space wise its good enough. So any suggestions on some 4-6inch turtles?
An eastern mud turtle, preferably captive bred.
A 20 gallon is OK to start, but you'll eventually want to upgrade. They like to hide, so floating cork bark and/or artificial silk or plastic plants come in handy. They can also bite! so handle as little as possible. Of course, this is a good rule of thumb for any turtle.
Care is pretty much the same as sliders, but keep the water about 4-6 inches. I prefer canister filters.
