Jackson's live birth

all4sky Feb 29, 2004 03:23 AM

Hi, I'm getting into jackson's and was wondering if anyone can explain breeding them, and how live birth goes. I've had experience with eggs and incubation but have never worked with live bearing herps before. How would I know if my female is pregnant, and what can I expect? Thanks for your time.

I don't keep jackson's chams myself, and i don;t know about breeding them, but i know that when they give birth, the birth sac has a sticky membrane on it. When the female give birth, she will usually "aim" her young at a branch she is on, and they will stick to the branch. After that, they emerge from the birth sac and start eating, eating, eating.

I've never seen more than a small fraction of the babies stick to a branch. Most hit the cage floor. And be aware that over-feeding females can cause the same reproductive problems as in egg layers. And be aware that infant mortalities are often hiogher than in egg layers. You need to be doing some reading. Start with the profiles & baby rearing articles at www.adcham.com
